# 3. Initialize the configuration

> Create the Toolkit configuration files on your Mac with bin/init.

From the Toolkit directory, in a terminal with GNU sed on the `PATH`, run:

```bash theme={null}
bin/init
```

`bin/init` creates three files:

| File | Purpose |
| - | - |
| `config/overleaf.rc` | Container settings, the published port and the data locations |
| `config/variables.env` | Application settings and secrets |
| `config/version` | The application image version |

It also generates `OVERLEAF_INVITE_TOKEN_SECRET` in `config/variables.env`. Keep it, and do not publish this file or commit it to version control.

Keep the version that the Toolkit selects for a new installation. To change the version of an existing instance later, follow [Upgrading your deployment](https://ayakaleaf-pro.mintlify.site/on-premises/maintenance/upgrading-your-deployment.md).

> [!WARNING]
>
> If `bin/init` stops with `sed: ... invalid command code`, it ran with the BSD sed of macOS. Such a failed run can leave all three files in `config/` with an empty `OVERLEAF_INVITE_TOKEN_SECRET`, and running `bin/init` again then reports `Config files already exist`. See [Troubleshooting](https://ayakaleaf-pro.mintlify.site/on-premises/installation/using-docker-compose/macos/troubleshooting.md#initialization-fails-with-invalid-command-code).
