# Stars Are Not Maintenance: A Survey of AI LaTeX Editors in 2026

> Since OpenAI Prism launched in January 2026, dozens of AI LaTeX editors have appeared. We checked 48 of them on 2026-11-01 to see which are still maintained, which have slowed, and which have stopped.

> [!NOTE]

> **Disclosure.** This post is written by the Ayakaleaf team. Ayakaleaf Pro is one of the editors in the table below. We measured it the same way as every other project and marked its row "(ours)". If you find a mistake, see [Corrections](#corrections).

## Why we wrote this

OpenAI launched Prism, a LaTeX workspace with built-in AI, on 2026-01-27. Since then, new "AI LaTeX editors" have appeared on GitHub, Reddit and Hacker News almost every week. Many are built in a few weeks, promoted across forums, and collect hundreds or thousands of GitHub stars. Some keep improving. Others stop soon after launch, while their star counts stay where they were.

A star count tells you how many people noticed a project. It does not tell you whether anyone is still fixing bugs. Before you move a paper or a thesis into a new editor, it is worth checking. This post lists what we found, with dates, and how you can check for yourself.

## The table

In short, as of 2026-11-01:

* We checked 48 editors: 35 active, 6 slowing, 4 stopped and 2 we could not confirm. OpenAI Prism itself shuts down on 2027-01-01.
* 15 of the 35 active projects first appeared in October or November 2026. They are too new to judge.
* Of the 12 open-source AI projects that were public before July 2026, 6 are still active, 2 have slowed and 4 have stopped.
* Three of the eight projects with the most stars have slowed or stopped: ClaudePrism (1.8k stars, slowing), Prismer (781, stopped) and OpenDCAI/OpenPrism (387, stopped).

Each project gets a status from its last update, counted back from 2026-11-01:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Active | A feature or fix commit (open source) or a public update (closed source) in the last 30 days |
| Slowing | Last update 30–120 days ago, or monthly commits down more than 90% from their peak |
| Stopped | No substantive commit for more than 120 days, or only an initial commit |
| Shutting down | The vendor has announced an end-of-service date |
| Unconfirmed | Closed source with no public changelog, so we could not tell |

Commits that only change the license year or the README do not count as updates. Rows are sorted by status, then by stars. Stars above 1,000 are rounded as GitHub shows them. For forks of Overleaf, commits count only the fork's own work, not merged upstream code.

† Taken from our survey notes rather than the main data set. Stars come from the GitHub API on 2026-11-02 and commit data from Git histories cloned on 2026-10-08.\
¹ See [A note on names](#a-note-on-names).\
² Later commits on 2026-09-28 (license year) and 2026-10-29 (Node.js upgrade) are maintenance chores, so the last update shown is the initial code commit.

## What the data shows

1. **Most copies of Prism appeared within weeks.** Of the 7 open-source projects whose monthly commit history we tracked from January to October, 4 were created within four weeks of Prism's launch. assistant-ui/open-prism was created on 2026-01-28, within a day. OpenDCAI/OpenPrism made all 30 of its commits between 2026-02-05 and 2026-02-11, and VishiATChoudhary/open-prism made all 9 of its commits on 2026-06-17.
2. **Activity dropped across the board in April.** ClaudePrism went from 249 commits in March to 20 in April, Prismer from 58 to 3, and Octree from 21 to 5. Ayakaleaf Pro's own commits also fell, from 39 in February to 4 in total across March to May, then recovered to 22–47 a month from June. Commit data alone cannot tell us why.
3. **The projects that lasted have something besides an AI panel.** Octree sells a hosted version. ClaudePrism has 14 contributors sharing the work. Ayakaleaf Pro is built on Overleaf, so compiling and collaboration come from upstream and the fork maintains its additions. Most projects that stopped were a single team's one-off demo.
4. **Work on the editor itself is what keeps going.** In the same months, TeXlyre (no AI) made 100 commits in September, texpile made 119–205 a month from July to September, and TexLite made more than 80 a month in August and September. texpile and TexLite let you connect an external agent instead of building the product around a chat panel. Compiling, collaboration and file handling are the long-term work.
5. **A large vendor can shut a product down too.** OpenAI Prism, the product that started this wave, shuts down on 2027-01-01, and OpenAI says project data is deleted after that date. Who builds an editor matters less than whether you can take your work with you.

## Before you move your work to a new editor

Each of these checks takes a minute or two:

1. **Look at the commit history, not the star count.** On GitHub, open **Insights → Contributors** to see commits per week. A tall spike at launch followed by a flat line is the pattern behind most of the slowing and stopped rows above.
2. **Check when a maintainer last answered an issue.** Open issues without a reply for months tell you how your bug report will be handled.
3. **Count the people.** If one person makes nearly all the commits, the project stops when that person does.
4. **Export a project before you rely on the editor.** You should get plain `.tex`, `.bib` and image files that compile elsewhere. Keep your own copy in Git, whichever editor you use, including ours.
5. **Find out where your text goes.** AI features send your manuscript to a model provider. Check which provider, whose API key is used, and what that provider's data policy says.

## A note on names

Apart from OpenAI Prism, none of the projects in the table is published by OpenAI or Anthropic, whatever its name suggests. Several borrow "Prism" from OpenAI's product.

ClaudePrism ([delibae/claude-prism](https://github.com/delibae/claude-prism)) is an independent, third-party project. It is not made by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Anthropic (the maker of Claude) or OpenAI (the maker of Prism). Its name combines Claude, the model it calls through Claude Code, with OpenAI Prism, the product it presents itself as an alternative to. In its favor, it keeps projects as files on your disk with local Git snapshots, so your work stays with you even if development stops.

## How we collected the data

* **Scope.** Editors first released or first shown publicly in 2026 whose main selling point is AI help with writing LaTeX. Forks of Overleaf count if their independent development started in 2026 and they added AI. Overleaf's own AI features, browser extensions and stand-alone MCP servers are out of scope. TeXlyre and overleaf-cep have no AI and are included only as a reference.
* **Where we looked.** Search engines, Hacker News, AlternativeTo, and the GitHub topics [latex-editor](https://github.com/topics/latex-editor), [overleaf-alternative](https://github.com/topics/overleaf-alternative), [openai-prism](https://github.com/topics/openai-prism), [typst-editor](https://github.com/topics/typst-editor), [scientific-writing](https://github.com/topics/scientific-writing) and [overleaf](https://github.com/topics/overleaf).
* **Open-source projects.** We cloned each repository's full history with `git clone --filter=blob:none` and counted commits per month, authors and tags ourselves, without third-party star trackers.
* **Closed-source projects.** We could only check whether the site is online, its changelog and press coverage, so these rows are less certain than the open-source ones.
* **Limits.** Commit counts measure activity, not quality. A small project with few recent commits may simply be finished rather than abandoned. Projects that first appeared in October or November 2026 show as active, but it is too early to say whether they will last.

## Corrections

These numbers change quickly. If a row is wrong or a project is missing, [open an issue](https://github.com/ayaka-notes/ayakaleaf-docs/issues) with a link that shows the correct data. We will update the table and note the date of the change here.
